About Loona

LOONA (stylized as LOOΠΔ) is a South Korean girl group formed by Blockberry Creative. Its twelve members were revealed in a periodic fashion, corresponding to their Korean name 이달의 소녀, which translates to "Girl of the Month".

Loona's English name is derived from the Hangul letters ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ, each an initial consonant in the syllabic blocks that make 이달의 소녀. When rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, it resembles LOONA in the Latin alphabet.

Loona commenced their pre-debut project in August 2016, with each member releasing a promotional single over the next eighteen months. The group has formed three sub-units: Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy. Their debut EP as a full ensemble, [+ +] (2018), was supported by the lead single "Hi High".

On October 2, 2016, Blockberry Creative announced through Naver that they would be debuting their first girl group through an 18-month long pre-debut project. Between October 2016 and January 2017, four members (HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and YeoJin) were revealed; each member released a single album typically consisting of a solo track and another track performed with other revealed members, under the group's 이달의 소녀 (Girl of the Month) In March 2017, the group's first sub-unit, Loona 1/3, was introduced, consisting of previously revealed members HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul and a new member, ViVi. Loona 1/3 released the extended play Love & Live and accompanying single of the same name on March 13, 2017, with a television promotion on SBS's Inkigayo. They released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled Love & Evil, on April 27.

Odd Eye Circle
Between April 2017 and July 2017, members ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry released their single albums, continuing the same Girl of the Month pattern. In September 2017, three members, HeeJin, HyunJin and HaSeul, auditioned for JTBC's reality show Mix Nine: HeeJin and HyunJin passed the audition stage making it onto the show, where HyunJin placed Top 18 and HeeJin placed fourth in the finale. The group's second sub-unit, Loona Odd Eye Circle, consisting of JinSoul, Kim Lip and Choerry, released the extended play Mix & Match on September 21, 2017, and began promotions on Mnet's M Countdown. The English version of their song "Loonatic" was released on October 23. On October 31 they released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled Max & Match, which included three new songs.

Between November 2017 and January 2018, they released the solo single albums for new members Yves, Chuu, and Go Won, continuing the monthly pattern along with the digital single "The Carol 2.0" sung by Yves, Vivi, and Choerry. In March 2018, they released the solo single album for final member, Olivia Hye. On May 30, 2018, the group's third sub-unit, Loona yyxy, made their debut with the extended play Beauty & the Beat. The single "love4eva" featuring Canadian musician Grimes was released the same day with an accompanying music video.

HI HIGH

"Hi High" was released on August 20, 2018, as the title track of Loona's album (+ +), by Blockberry Creative. It is the second single released by Loona as a full twelve-member group.

COMPOSITION
The lyrics were written by Jaden Jeong, MonoTree's GDLO, and MonoTree's Hwang Hyun. The music was composed by Mayu Wakisaka, MonoTree's GDLO, and MonoTree's Hwang Hyun. According to Loona, "Hi High" has the double meaning of saying hi to the now-complete lineup of the 12 members in addition to representing Loona's goal of climbing to the top of the music scene. It can also been seen as a reference to the LOONAverse, as all 12 girls, or 3 'worlds' come together.

Billboard described "Hi High" as a "bright electro-pop song full of quirky beats and synths" with an "upbeat chorus". Furthermore, Billboard stated that the "track picks up and drops momentum frequently", allowing it to highlight the different singing styles of each member of Loona. The Kpop Herald also commented on how the song "delivers the bubbly energy of the band", and TenAsia similarly characterized the song as energetic. Hong Dam-young's album review in The Korea Herald remarked that "Hi High" is fast-paced with a "vivacious tempo and explosive vocals." However, Hong criticized the writing of the song's lyrics as a "major drawback" due to some of its "silly lines".

BACKGROUND AND RELEASE
A teaser for the music video of the song was released on August 17, 2018, and showed the members of Loona running towards somewhere. Various teaser images were also revealed in the lead up to the album's release. On August 20, "Hi High" was released alongside the album (+ +) as its title track.

COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE
"Hi High" peaked at number #11 on the US World Digital Songs Sales, marking their second consecutive entry on the chart as a full group.

MUSIC VIDEO
The song's release on August 20, 2018, was accompanied by a music video that was directed by the production company Digipedi, which also worked on many of Loona's previous music videos, including for "favOriTe". The video is colorful and depicts the members of Loona each dressed in a schoolgirl style, dancing and running. At the end of the video, Loona member Hee Jin jumps upward toward the sky, portraying a sense of positivity and enthusiasm.

The music video reached three million views in three days after its debut, and it later surpassed ten million views eight days after its debut.

BUTTERFLY

"Butterfly" was released on February 19th, 2019, as the title track from (× ×), the repackage of (+ +) (2018).

COMPOSITION
The lyrics were written by G-High from MonoTree and Jaden Jeong, with G-High also serving as the producer.

Billboard described "Butterfly" as having a "bass-infused, synthy melody" with a "sense of bright airiness and groovy beat drops." It also highlighted the focus on the diverse vocals tones that moved between "autotuned wails, breathy verses and coy raps". Lyrically, the women sing about flying like the titular creature and letting dreams take flight.

COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE
"Butterfly" debuted at #6 on the US World Digital Songs Sales chart with 1,000 downloads sold. This is their second Top 10 on the chart and third entry as full group, after "favOrite" peaked at #4 and "Hi High" peaked at #11.

MUSIC VIDEO
The music video was shot in France, Hong Kong, China, the United States, Iceland and Korea. LOONA’s visual director DIGIPEDI toured around 5 countries from 3 continents for LOONA’s Butterfly effects to capture the freedom and courage of girls worldwide in the music video of "Butterfly".
